Ontario college animation programs are often very diverse - some may be primarily web programs, others focused on 2D or 3D animation and computer animation, while still others emphasize traditional professional illustration.

General Animation Program Requirements

Animation programs often require only an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent with a compulsory grade 12 English credit. You may also be required to present a portfolio of your work in the visual arts field.

Also, be aware that some animation programs are structured as graduate studies for those who already have a diploma or degree in the Visual Arts field. Be sure to read each college's course requirements carefully to ensure you qualify.

Animation Jobs and Salaries

There are many avenues open for those who study animation. Among these, film and television animation have had a consistent draw, opening up opportunities for CG animators, modelers and lighters, as well as animation directors. Web animation is steadily increasing in popularity, allowing graduates in the field to work as web designers and producers, as well as with an agency or as independent consultants.

Salaries in the field of animation will vary depending on the career path. The average starting salary for animation program graduates is between $30,000 and $40,000 per year. Those with experience who work in an agency or company could see upwards of $60,000 per year, while expert independent consultants could earn even more on a pay-per-project basis.
