Blacksmith Programs at Ontario Colleges

Blacksmith Courses

Ontario college blacksmith programs mix theory and hands-on courses. Students will learn forge welding, tool making, hot carving, cutting and more, and will gain the knowledge and experience they need to create a variety of metal products, including (but not limited to):

• Custom railings
• Home decoration / art
• Garden décor
• Furniture
• Hardware

Students will take courses that teach them to understand diagrams, and will use drafting to create designs. Blacksmith programs will also provide students with entrepreneurial skills, such as self-promotion, product purchasing and studio operations.

General Blacksmith Program Requirements

Students who want to take a blacksmith program require an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent. Grade 11 and 12 English credits are also required.

It is recommended that students be physically fit and have good manual dexterity to have the best chance of success in these programs.

Blacksmith Jobs and Salaries

Graduates of blacksmith programs at Ontario colleges could end up working in shops and art studios or with architects, private suppliers, metal fabricators and other industrial organizations.

As with most trades, wages reflect your experience level. The average starting salary for blacksmiths is around $30,000. This may be higher, if you’re in a more artistic or highly creative and custom blacksmithing role.

Blacksmith programs can also be used as preparation for apprenticeships in other fields, such as metal fabrication and welding. If you want to start an apprenticeship, you must register with the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.
