Advertising Courses
Classes in an advertising program will prepare you for a number of different careers in the field. Copywriting, public relations, marketing and personal selling are just a few of the areas you'll learn in an Ontario college program, which you can then apply to your career path. You'll also have training in the various forms of advertising, from traditional print advertising and television advertising to cutting-edge Internet advertising and interactive advertising, giving you a range of choice for your career.
Marketing strategy, brand advertising and the skills needed for effective advertising are other foundations you will learn. Many colleges will also offer a work placement component to their course study, which means you'll have the opportunity to put your new skills into practice with a hands-on experience in an advertising company or advertising agency.
General Advertising Program Requirements
An Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or the equivalent is required for admission to an Ontario college advertising program. While it may vary from college to college, a grade 12 English and mathematics course is usually mandatory and a strong interest in the arts or creative writing is often considered an asset.
Advertising Jobs and Salaries
Your advertising program education can take you far. You may find yourself in anything from product advertising to advertising research, and you'll be equipped to work for an advertising agency or as an independent advertising consultant or copywriter.
Salaries in the advertising field vary. While you may start off making as little as $28,000 a year as a junior marketer or copywriter at an agency, working your way up to an account executive or manager or striking out on your own could bring you upwards of $80,000 per year or to a significant per-project flat rate.
