Business (Municipal and Public) Courses

Courses in municipal and public business programs (also known as public administration programs) provide students with a thorough understanding of the operations and roles of government. Students can choose between programs that have a municipal-level focus or those that encompass all levels of government. In both types of programs, focus will be on budgets and finance, political issues, administration structure and how public policy is developed.

Courses with an emphasis on specific stakeholder relations will teach students how to communicate effectively with people who are most affected by, have an interest in, or can influence government. By the end of the program, students will have strong leadership, organization, research, and verbal and written communication skills.

General Business (Municipal and Public) Program Requirements

Ontario college municipal and public business programs offered as entry level programs require an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, which includes a grade 12 English credit. Depending on the program, grade 11 or 12 math credits may also be required.

For programs offered at the post-graduate level, students will require a university degree.

Business (Municipal and Public) Jobs and Salaries

Graduates often find jobs in municipal, provincial and federal government, or in not-for-profit organizations that provide government services. Common opportunities include roles in government-specific marketing and communications, policy analysis and development, finance and human resources.

Government jobs are known to pay well and typically have good benefits. Many graduates find positions in various levels of government with average starting salaries of around $45,000.
