What to expect from a career as a Marketer

The world of marketing combines a number of skills, from communication and creativity to research and business. Marketing programs at Ontario colleges are intensive, but the training provided will set you up for a number of in-demand careers.

If you see yourself in the field of marketing, here’s what you need to know.

Marketing Courses

Marketing programs give students a deep understanding of the field, from traditional marketing practices and brand marketing principles to the latest in web marketing and interactive marketing. Two-year and three-year diploma programs will teach students skills such as marketing research and planning, which will be put into practice through hands-on experience with clients and examination of case studies.

Students will also delve into studies of related fields, such as graphic design and advertising, to build on their knowledge base and prepare them for work with clients or companies.

Graduates of two- and three-year marketing diploma programs have the option of applying to the Canadian Institute of Marketing to become a Registered Professional Marketer, a credential which could help with job market competition.

Note: One-year marketing certificate programs are also available for those who wish to build on their prior education in related fields. Applicants must show proof of completion of a degree or diploma program to be eligible.

General Marketing Program Requirements

Marketing programs require an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, which includes a grade 12 English credit. Most institutions will either require or recommend a grade 12 mathematics credit as well.

Credits in information sciences and technology and business are also an asset.

Marketing Jobs and Salaries

Marketing programs prepare you for work in any number of fields, as most businesses have some form of marketing department or marketing strategy. Specific areas of business you may enter include (but are not limited to):

Marketing salaries are often highly competitive, particularly for independent marketing consultants.
