Ontario college pre-health programs often have different goals, though all are related to preparing students for careers in the health and medical industry. The different program specialties may include:

• Improving language skills. Some pre-health programs have the specific intent of helping ESL students improve their language skills, with a focus on working in a medical career.
• Meeting program requirements. Pre-health programs help students improve their fundamental knowledge in chemistry, biology, math and physics so they can meet admission requirements for the health and medical programs in which they are interested.
• Choosing a career path. Many students have an interest in the health and medical field but don’t know exactly what career path to choose. Pre-health programs expose them to a number of options, so they can choose the one right for them.

General Pre-Health Program Requirements

Pre-health programs at Ontario colleges require an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, which includes a grade 12 English credit and a senior math credit. Senior science credits, such as those in biology, chemistry or physics, may also be required.

It’s important to note that successful completion of a pre-health program does not necessarily guarantee admittance into a health or medical diploma or degree program. Typically, students need to maintain a specific grade point average and apply to their program choices to be considered.

Pre-Health Jobs and Salaries

Pre-health programs are generally used as a stepping stone into diploma or degree programs necessary for starting a career in the health industry. Graduates of these programs have a unique advantage in their continuing education, having already gathered practical knowledge and training.
