In the first year of many computer networking and communications programs at Ontario colleges, students can expect to learn the fundamentals of computer hardware, operating systems and computer programming. From there, skills in management systems and server operations, as well as practical applications of local area networks (LAN) and wide area networks (WAN), will be developed. Students can expect to learn the latest in network security using the most up-to-date computer security software.

There are a variety of computer networking and communications programs available, including computer network technician and computer network technologies training. Often, the difference is in the length and depth of study, with some programs offering a Bachelor of Applied Information Sciences option for further education. General Computer Networking and Communications Requirements

Admission requirements for computer networking and communications programs at Ontario colleges include an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, with a grade 12 English (and often a grade 12 mathematics) credit.

After completion of the program, many colleges recommend students write the MCSA exams, as well as the CCNA exam, as recognition from industry leaders Microsoft and Cisco.
