The first step will be choosing which area of web training is right for you. Some of your options include (but aren’t limited to):

• Web Developer. Web development is one of the fastest growing careers in Canada. Multiple-year web development programs provide basic design skills, as well as skills in building, programming, supporting and managing websites. Certificate programs are also available for continuing education in the IT field.
• Web Designer. Available in multiple-year programs or as graduate studies, web design programs combine fundamental graphic design courses with the latest in web technology and web design software.
• Internet Application Programmer. These two-year diploma programs combine computer programming skills with systems analysis, database design, server implementation skills and more to prepare students to work as Internet application or computer programmers, as well as web developers.

Many of these programs will overlap with each other. Read each program description carefully before choosing which one is right for you.

General Web Design and Development Program Requirements

Most web design and development programs at Ontario colleges require, at minimum, an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, with a grade 12 English credit. A grade 12 mathematics credit will be required or recommended in most circumstances. Computer and information science and business technology credits will also be seen as beneficial.

Web Design and Development Jobs and Salaries

Because of the high demand for professionals in the web industry, salaries are very competitive. The average starting salary of a web designer or web developer is between $35,000 and $40,000 per year, but could rise to $50,000 or more with experience.
