Living and learning at Durham College

At Durham College, the student experience comes first. In September 2015, the college welcomed more than 30,000 students to its Oshawa and Whitby campuses and Pickering Learning Site, including 12,000 full-time and apprenticeship, as well as part-time and continuing education students and online learners. The college offers over 140 market-driven programs in a number of different disciplines including culinary, hospitality, tourism, horticulture, business, information technology, media, art, design, general arts, science, skilled trades, justice, emergency services, health and engineering technology, enabling students to develop the skills required to meet the demands of today’s job market.

The college also offers numerous diploma-to-degree programs in conjunction with universities in Canada and around the world, allowing students to earn a university degree in less time. In addition, university graduates with appropriate degrees may opt for fast-track college programs, completing their diploma requirements in only two semesters.

Durham College: Oshawa and Whitby campuses and Pickering Learning Site
The Oshawa campus is home to a range of programs in the areas of business, IT, management, health, community services, justice, emergency services, media, art, design, science and engineering technology.

The campus is shared with the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) and students have access to cutting-edge facilities including the award- winning Campus Library, Integrated Manufacturing Centre, Centre for Integrated Justice Studies, Biotechnology and Nursing Labs, the 150-seat Computer Commons, and the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre (CRWC), which includes the FLEX Fitness Centre and the Campus Health Centre.

The Whitby campus is a leading facility in preparing skilled trade and renewable energy students for a wide range of positions. The campus is also home to students studying in our innovative culinary, hospitality and horticulture and events programs. The three-phase campus development project has recently been completed to provide our students with world-class learning facilities.

Phase one saw the establishment of a comprehensive learning facility designed to train students in renewable energy and meet the projected demand for green jobs in Ontario. Students have access to renewable energy equipment and training in a living laboratory environment focused on geothermal technology systems, solar cell systems and solar water heating, preparing them for a wide variety of exciting career opportunities.

The second phase added new space to the campus including an expanded shop area for student-use and programs focused on green building trades and technology. New energy labs, classrooms and boardrooms; a new Student Association space; a renovated reception area; and two living labs that demonstrate the many changes happening in the construction and building trades sectors.

The third phase was the establishment of the Centre for Food (CFF), a state-of-the-art learning facility for approximately 900 students studying in culinary, hospitality, event management, food science, agricultural and horticultural programs. The CFF also houses Bistro ’67, a green-certified teaching-inspired restaurant; Pantry, a unique retail store that brings student-created goods straight from the culinary classroom to the community; a demonstration lecture theatre; public viewing kitchens; labs; classrooms; and meeting spaces.

The Pickering Learning Site opened in September 2012. Designed specifically to meet the needs of students looking to further their credentials in an environment focused on mature, professional learners and innovative curriculum delivery, Durham College offers the following graduate certificate programs at the site:

  • Addictions and Mental Health
  • Human Resources Management
  • Victimology
  • Youth Justice and Interventions

Durham Student Life
The college knows how important life outside the classroom is, which is why there are more than 70 student groups on campus, a vibrant Student Association, the Durham Lords varsity sports teams, intramural sports teams, the campus ice and tennis centres, the Student Centre, EP Taylor's Pub and Restaurant and the CRWC.

Durham Student Housing
Durham College offers a variety of safe, clean, and comfortable on-campus living accommodations in the Simcoe Village and South Village residence buildings, located at the Oshawa campus. First-year students enrolled in September-start programs are guaranteed a room in residence as long as they meet the deadlines set out by the college.

In addition, a number of townhouse units, featuring the independence of apartment living while residing on campus, are available for students in their upper years of study.

Durham Student Services
Durham College has a state-of-the-art Student Services building at its Oshawa campus. The facility creates a vital first point of access for potential applicants, current students, and graduates with multiple services such as Registration and Records, Career Development and Financial Aid and Awards all under the same roof.

The college provides students with services and support that have a positive impact on their success and personal development including financial aid and budgeting assistance, information on student loans, on-campus employment opportunities, assistance with accessibility needs, academic advice, peer tutoring, help with study skills and exam preparation, career guidance and advice pre- and post-graduation, and more.
