What to expect from a career in Autism and Behavioural Science

It’s only recently that autism and other behavioural conditions have begun to receive the attention they deserve. Research into these conditions is increasing and new treatment options and techniques are beginning to emerge. Behavioural science programs at Ontario colleges prepare students for roles in the behavioural science field, as counsellors and consultants for clients who suffer from any number of behavioural conditions.

Behavioural Science Courses

Behavioural science programs focus on teaching cognitive behaviour therapy and counselling to help treat a number of conditions, from kids acting out in class to people recovering from brain injuries and more. Students will study developmental psychopathology, behavioural assessment, counselling, intervention techniques and more to help understand and analyze various behavioural conditions and also to prepare for volatile or difficult work situations.

Some Ontario college behavioural science programs will focus heavily on the treatment of ASD – Autism Spectrum Disorder. These programs will provide a broad understanding of autism and its related conditions, and will use courses in behavioural skill building, behaviour treatment, parent and staff training, crisis intervention and more to help graduates prepare for treatment of individuals who suffer from autism.

General Behavioural Science Program Requirements

Ontario college behavioural science programs typically require an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, which includes a grade 12 English credit. Additional academic requirements will vary by program, but may include senior math and science credits.

Autism and behavioural science programs are typically offered as one-year graduate certificate programs, which means completion of a diploma or degree is also required.

The starting salary in the behavioural science field typically ranges from $27,000 to $37,000 per year, depending on the type of position and level of qualification.
