Environmental protection is a top priority across many industries, which makes education from environmental programs at Ontario colleges increasingly in-demand. Many companies and businesses are putting increased value on managing environmental issues and on cleaning up their business practices to promote protection of the planet; in light of this, it’s no surprise that environmental jobs are springing up in fields from production and manufacturing to marketing and public relations as companies look to decrease their carbon footprint and market themselves as “green”.

Environmental Courses

Environmental education is a broad term that includes many different areas of environmental training, from ecosystem preservation and landscape management programs, to science and technology-based ecology and environmental management programs that train students to handle environmental pollution issues.

Many of these programs are one-year certificate programs building on prior science or technology training, while others are full 2- to 3-year diploma programs dedicated to environmental health. They include specialties such as environmental conservation, environmental protection and control, environmental management, and environmental landscape management.

Depending on the area of study you choose, course topics may cover issues like the environmental impacts of humans and businesses throughout history, the study of ecosystem and environmental protection, the principles of energy and environmental audits, landscape management and much more. Field placements and outdoor lab work are also a common part of many program curriculums.

General Environmental Program Requirements

Ontario college environmental management programs at the certificate or diploma level require an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, including a grade 12 English credit. Post-graduate certificate programs require prior education in science and technology programs.

Environmental Jobs and Salaries

Depending on the area of study you choose, environmental jobs are available from Ontario Parks, Conservation Authorities, community landscape management programs and much more.

You may also find an environmental career in the business industry, as an environmental consultant, energy auditor, lab safety technician or in sales and marketing.

Salaries for environmental jobs depend on your level of training and your area of study. The average entry-level salary for graduates is around $34,000 per year, while experienced environmental consultants and auditors could see salaries in the $70,000 to $80,000 range.
