What to expect from an Architectural Technician career

The architecture industry is constantly evolving as advancing technology and modern developments lead to new and exciting design and construction opportunities. Architectural technicians play a vital role in the industry, working alongside architectural professionals to plan and execute sophisticated residential and commercial designs. Architecture programs at Ontario colleges train students to enter this progressive field, with practical skills and advanced training with the latest architectural technology.

Architecture Courses

Architecture programs generally fall into one of two categories:

Architectural Technician. These programs are two-year diploma programs that prepare students for work in the construction industry, alongside architects, engineers, contractors and other professionals. Students will learn to prepare construction drawings and specifications as well as architectural designs, using the latest computer technology. Course topics include drafting, building code standards, materials and measurements, as well as the history of architecture and architectural design.
Architectural Technology. Architectural technology programs have the same foundations as technician programs, but have a third year that is used for more advanced training. Depending on the program, the third year may involve further general knowledge and additional training with architecture software and technology, or specialized training in one area of architecture, such as commercial detailing.

Specialty architecture programs are also available. For example, the green architecture graduate certificate program focuses on environmentally friendly construction and designing for sustainability, while the three-year architecture and construction program combines design training with construction industry skills such as estimating, building codes, building systems and more.

General Architecture Program Requirements

Ontario college architecture programs typically require an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, including grade 12 English and mathematics credits. For architecture graduate programs, completion of a degree or diploma in a related program is required.

Architecture Jobs and Salaries

Architectural technicians and technologists can work in the private sector, as well as with municipal, provincial or federal agencies. They work alongside a number of professionals, including architects, engineers, contractors, builders, developers and more.

Starting salaries for architectural technicians are typically between $32,000 and $35,000 per year.
