Civil engineering tech programs typically fall into one of two categories:

• Civil Engineering Technician. In two-year civil engineering technician programs, students learn vital skills in planning, estimating, building and maintenance that will help them in many areas of civil engineering, whether it’s building dams, laying pipelines, planning subway systems or other tasks. Theoretical courses in mathematics, construction technology, soil mechanics and more will complement practical skills training, including (but not limited to) surveying, municipal planning and computer aided drafting (CAD).
• Civil Engineering Technology. Three-year civil engineering technology programs work from the same foundations as technician programs, but use the third year to prepare students for more advanced work in design and for supervisory roles. Along with additional knowledge in civil engineering skills and techniques, administrative courses such as project scheduling, budgeting and business principles may also be included.

General Civil Engineering Tech Program Requirements

Ontario college civil engineering tech programs typically require an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, which includes grade 12 English and grade 12 math credits. A grade 12 physics credit may also be recommended.

Civil Engineering Tech Jobs and Salaries

Civil engineering technicians and technologists are employed across many industries, including residential and commercial construction, building inspection, civil projects (pipelines, road repair, etc.), surveying, materials testing and more. Starting salaries in the industry are on the higher side, with many entry-level technician and technologist positions ranging between $40,000 and $45,000.
