What to expect from a career in Control Systems

In today’s high-tech world, electronic control systems play a vital role in manufacturing, processing, servicing and more – a lot of the things we buy and depend on have been created or impacted by control systems. Ontario college control systems programs teach students how to plan, design and develop systems that direct and manipulate other operating systems.

Control Systems Courses

Control systems programs at Ontario colleges consist of a variety of courses that combine theory with practical applications. Common courses, with both lecture and lab components, include electric and AC circuits, process instrumentation systems, CAD (computer aided design), interface design and control, and power generation and distribution.

Math and physics play a big role in understanding and designing control systems. Math and physics courses relevant to electrical engineering are strategically placed throughout programs.

Co-op terms are also offered in some of the programs, where students will apply their technical knowledge to real-life situations.

General Control Systems Program Requirements

Ontario college control systems programs require an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent and a grade 12 English and math credit. Some colleges require or recommend specific math courses that would best prepare students for the program. Be sure to check program requirements carefully.

Control Systems Jobs and Salaries

As a graduate of a control systems program, you will use your programming and troubleshooting skills to fill roles in engineering like control systems specialist, electrical (or electronic) engineering technologist or electrical engineering technician. You may be responsible for maintaining, servicing and designing control systems and equipment. Jobs can be found in a variety of industries, including (but not limited to) government, telecommunications and utility providers.

Control systems professionals have an average starting salary of between $35,000 and $45,000. Experience level, type of industry and job responsibilities will impact salaries.
