Students in anesthesia programs gain a full understanding of the procedures and safety regulations related to all three types of anesthesia (general, local and regional). They will learn to operate the anesthesia gas machine, as well as how to assess, monitor and properly care for patients. Courses will also focus on the pharmacology of anesthesia.
Anesthesia programs involve field experience, where students learn under the direct supervision of an anesthesiologist. At the end of the program, graduates have the experience and knowledge to support the anesthesiologist when administering all three types of anesthetic.
General Anesthesia Program Requirements
Anesthesia programs at Ontario colleges are post-graduate opportunities that will likely have the following requirements:
- Respiratory Therapy Advanced Diploma OR Nursing Degree
- 4000 hours of experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Registered Nurse (RN)
Applicants may also need to be a member of a related College or Society (such as the College of Respiratory Therapists), and will need to undergo an assessment evaluation. Check requirements at individual colleges, as they will vary.
