Massage services is a rapidly growing industry, with many diverse career opportunities opening up within it. Whether you’re interested in becoming a massage therapist or you want to learn to manage your own facility, massage programs at Ontario colleges can give you the skills and knowledge you need to get your career started.

Massage Courses

Massage therapy programs focus on both theoretical knowledge and practical training. In theory courses, subjects cover topics such as anatomy and physiology, human growth and development, therapeutic exercise, thermal and hydrotherapy and much more. Through hands-on training, students will practice assessing clients and using various massage techniques. Students will alternate giving and receiving massages to gain a better understanding of the process and effect of massage therapy.

In addition to massage training, programs consist of communications, entrepreneurship and general wellness courses so students not only have the hands-on experience but also the business knowledge needed to work at spas and other health and medical organizations, or to open their own facility.

General Massage Program Requirements

Ontario college massage programs require an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent. Required credits may include grade 12 English and senior sciences, depending on the program.

Other non-academic requirements may include proof of immunization and vaccination, CPR training and a background check.

Massage Jobs and Salaries

In order to be a massage therapist in Ontario, you need to register and take exams through the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario. Once you have the certification, there are numerous positions available in a variety of sectors, including (but not limited to):

Health clubs
Sports clinics
Day spas and wellness centres
Hotels and resorts
Hospitals

Students may also choose to offer their services independently or to start their own businesses.

Salaries in the field will vary depending on the position and number of years of experience. The average starting salary is around $43,000, with the potential to earn much more. Wages for independent massage therapists or on-site massage therapists will depend on the number of clients and the baseline fee for services.
