Many Ontario colleges offer programs in the field of paramedics, and are equipped to teach students the skills they need to make it in this challenging, yet rewarding, career. Some of what you’ll be learning includes how to handle emergency situations and how to deliver pre-hospital health care.

Aside from the technical training, paramedic classes will also teach fundamental interpersonal skills. Here, you’ll learn how to communicate effectively and work as part of a team, as well as how to interact with patients who are under duress.

General Paramedic Program Requirements

If you want to become a paramedic, be prepared to think about more than just your academic education. Physical conditioning requirements must be met and a number of certifications and legal documents will be required, often before you even step foot in the classroom.

While each school’s requirements may differ, basic paramedic requirements include:

• Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, with focus on Science and English courses
• Basic CPR and First-Aid certificates (or equivalents)
• A valid driver’s license, often class ‘F’
• The ability to meet minimum physical fitness standards

To become a paramedic in Ontario, you’ll also have to pass the Advanced Emergency Medical Care Assistant certification examination provided by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care after you complete your program.

Paramedic Jobs and Salaries

Paramedic jobs, which include flight paramedics, ambulance service paramedics and other specialized positions, are always in high demand. Although salaries fluctuate, jobs in the field often start at around $50,000 per year. Graduates of specialty programs, like advanced care paramedic, have an average starting salary of $73,000.

Factors that can influence salary include years of experience, field area, geographical location and whether you are a fulltime or part-time employee.
