Publishing Courses

Whether it’s a general book and magazine publishing course or one that focuses on only one of these areas, there are foundational skills that will be shared among them. Courses can be divided into three categories:

• Sales and Marketing. Sales and marketing courses will look at the different avenues available for book sales and promotions, from independent retailers to libraries to mass merchandising.
• Creative. Creative courses will include everything from graphic and publishing design courses to writing and editing courses, all of which will challenge you to think both creatively and critically.
• Business. Business-oriented classes will help students gather knowledge on acquisitions, legal and ethical issues in publishing, the finance of publishing and much more. They will also look into the various roles that make up the publishing industry, such as operations specialists and editors.

E-publishing, another popular area of focus in the publishing industry, focuses on teaching students web-based news publishing, from crafting online newsletters to gathering sustainable advertising sources.

General Publishing Program Requirements

Ontario college publishing programs are typically offered as graduate certificate programs, which means students must have completed a degree or diploma program in a related area (such as journalism, communications, creative writing, etc.) in order to be eligible. In some instances, a non-related credential combined with proof of industry experience may be accepted.

Publishing Jobs and Salaries

Graduates of Ontario college publishing programs are prepared to work at the leading book and magazine publishing organizations in Canada, in editorial, marketing production or design departments. Additional roles outside of publishing companies may include (but aren’t limited to):

• Book Reviewer
• Literary Agent
• Bookseller
• Educator
• Copyright Expert

Salaries in the field will vary by position, but in general, starting salaries are in the low-$30,000 range.
