Television Production Courses

Throughout television production programs at Ontario colleges, students will enhance their creativity and technical skills using the industry’s leading-edge technology. Programs combine theory and hands-on courses, focusing on techniques for operating audio and video equipment as well as methods for capturing and editing sounds and visuals.

A lot of time will also be spent in the studio, where students will apply their technical knowledge of script writing, microphone and lighting set-up, adding and editing animation, directing and much more. In addition, students will learn to prepare their work for distribution through new media outlets.

Note: Some television programs have specific areas of specialization, such as television broadcasting. These programs consist of similar courses in script writing and production, but include a focus on on-air presentation in all types of broadcasting, such as entertainment, news and sports.

General Television Production Program Requirements

Diploma-level television programs typically require an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, which includes a grade 12 English credit. Additional requirements will vary depending on the program.

Post-graduate television programs require a post-secondary diploma or degree, often in a related discipline (such as broadcasting). Other non-academic admission procedures may also be required, such as submitting a resume or attending an interview.

Television Production Jobs and Salaries

Ontario college television production programs can lead to exciting careers writing, producing, directing and editing in the film, television and new media industries. Graduates will find opportunities working in a variety of settings, including (but not limited to):

• Film and television sets
• Audio and visual departments
• Public and private broadcasting stations
• Network development offices
• Post-production studios

Salaries in the entertainment industry can be difficult to predict because of the wide range of jobs; however, the average starting salary for television program graduates is between $28,000 and $31,000 per year. The average salary for experienced producers and directors is around $55,000 and could go upwards of $90,000, depending on level of success.
