Millwright Programs at Ontario Colleges

Millwright Courses

Ontario college millwright programs (which are generally one-year certificate programs) prepare students to become a millwright apprentice, giving them the basic skills needed to enter the workforce. Courses in computer applications, drawings and schematics, electrical training give an overview of how to repair, maintain, dismantle and install machinery, in a variety of industrial and construction settings.

Some millwright programs will have a specialized focus. These may include (but are not limited to):

• Industrial Millwright / Construction Millwright. Specializing in the heavy equipment used in the industrial or construction fields.
• Packaging Millwright. Working with machinery in the packaging industry.

Depending on the institution, there will be plenty of hands-on learning involved in millwright training, both in labs and through work placements. Students will also spend time on career education and securing an apprenticeship.

General Millwright Program Requirements

Ontario college millwright programs require an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent for entrance, as well as a grade 12 English and grade 12 mathematics credit. Some programs may require that you already be registered as an apprentice with the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.

Millwright Jobs and Salaries

The millwright trade can take you into many fields – essentially anywhere where machinery is used. In fact, opportunities exist for overseas travel as an industrial mechanic if you’re interested in seeing the world.

Millwright salaries could start as low as $35,000 per year, but with experience in the field you could see that salary rise to roughly $50,000. High salaries in the field, particularly for those who travel or who join the millwright union, are at $70,000 or more per year.
